Episode 2
The destruction of a public housing community at Millers Point, Sydney, Part 2
In this second episode focusing on Millers Point and the Sirius Building I speak to Barney Gardner who has lived at Millers Point all his life. Barney was a leader of the resistance to the mass relocation of public tenants at Millers Point and his testimony on what happened brings home the devastating impact these kinds of government policies have on people. With Barney is Marie Sillars who also has links to Millers Point and faced a similar forced relocation at the Ivanhoe Estate in Macquarie Park.
Also hear a bonus episode where Barney talks with candid humour about growing up at Millers Point. His reflections on what was a great community are in stark contrast to the somewhat heartless place Millers Point has now become.
Links and Notes
Here are some articles, oral history recordings of residents at Millers Point, a piece Professor Alan Morris wrote for The Conversation and the trailer for the movie ‘The Eviction’ that features Barney prominently as a key organiser of the tenants’ resistance. If anyone can track down the full movie I’d love to post it here!
